Random Twenty

1. Last time you had butterflies in your stomach?
Last night when I received a text from someone who has recently caused us a lot of trouble and I was trying to work how to reply. It was more like a rabble of really angry butterflies. I was thinking of that Winston Churchill quote – Tact is the ability to tell someone to go to hell in such a way that they look forward to the trip.

2. What was your last alcoholic beverage?
Wine – last night. Don’t worry I wasn’t drunk texting.

3. Who can you trust?
No one.

4. Where was your first kiss with your current significant other?
Oh, wow, well it was in about 1985 but I’m not sure where – maybe at a party we both went to. I was with my boyfriend who wasn’t who I was kissing – it’s complicated.

5. Favorite Band?
Don’t have one that I’m mad about.

6. What is something you’ve learned about yourself recently?
That I don’t fall apart under pressure. It was a little concerning actually, how much of a shit I didn’t give.

7. Do you like anyone?
lol – rarely.

8. Do you know anyone who is engaged?
No

9. What’s your favorite number?
I’m a fan of the low evens.

10. Who was the last person to make you cry?
The arsehole from question number 1 – but they were angry, frustrated tears not sad ones.

11. Did you ever go to camp as a kid?
Yes – I had to travel bloody miles and seemed to be gone for months. I was sick there and spent time in the hospital. I was there for so long that my mother had time to write me letters. My dog had been bitten by a snake and she was giving me progress reports. There wasn’t any talk of coming and taking me home.

12. When was the last time you cried?
Last week – just for a couple of seconds. I don’t like crying – I’m an ugly crier.

13. What is one thing you miss about your past?
Nothing much. My VW beetle maybe.

14. What is one thing you’ve learned about life?
Just one? That it can be a real bitch sometimes but most of the time its grand.

15. Are you jealous of anyone?
No.

16. Is anyone jealous of you?
Lol – no idea.

17. Has a friend ever used you?
Oh gosh, probably. Oh yes, when I was 15 I had a boyfriend and he had a best friend who was always hanging around and this girl became friends with me so she could get with the friend. Nothing too drastic.

18. Has anyone recently told you that they like you more than as a friend?
No

19. Who was the last person you drove with?
Ummm, my daughter. It’s always fairly terrifying.

20. What are you looking forward to?
Lunch today to celebrate my daughters birthday and hanging out with my girls on Wednesday.

bomus questions meme

What’s your favorite frozen treat on a stick.
Chocolate paddle pop

What’s your favorite lollipop?
Don’t eat them.

When you passed notes during class in high school, who was mostly often the recipient?
I didn’t pass notes, I just talked and whispered.

Who among your high school friends was the first to get his or her own car?
Why – do you think you’ll know them? We all bought cars as soon as we could because we all lived out on farms with no other way into town and if you didn’t have a car you were screwed and destined to teenage years of boredom.

Who’s the black sheep in your family?
No one really, I’m a bit grey.

Who’s the family historian?
Well I have a lot of photos but my mother has made a couple of beautiful scrapbooks documenting her father’s history.

What was the last thing you sprayed from a spray bottle?
Surface spray

What was the last thing you sprayed from an aerosol can?
Fly spray.

When did you last make reservations for something?
Dinner on that stupid cruise ship.

What’s your next upcoming appointment?
Don’t have any but thanks for reminding me, I think I’ll have a flu shot.

What store’s departure from your preferred shopping mall most saddened you?
Well I don’t enjoy shopping so I can’t imagine being saddened by any store departing from my life.

What’s good to eat at your preferred shopping mall?
Nothing; those places are a hot bed of salmonella and e. coli

What services (as opposed to goods) do you pay for at your preferred shopping mall?
None

What’s a store you’ve never been inside at your preferred shopping mall?
I don’t bother with jewellery stores

What kind of store would you most welcome in your preferred shopping mall?
Clothing stores that sold clothes I like and not just the mass-produced neon coloured, cheap rubbish that I see store after store after store.

What did you most recently purchase at an office supply store?
Oh now I do love a good stationery shop. I spent $70 on pencils last week.

What did you most recently purchase at a book store?
Creative colouring in for grown ups – online book store.

What did you most recently purchase at a drugstore?
You mean a chemist, ummmmmmmm probably sunblock for the cruise but as it turned out the conditions were arctic so it wasn’t required.

What did you most recently purchase at a convenience store?
Nothing, I don’t go to them as I’ve got two major supermarkets close by me and things are cheaper there anyway.

What did you most recently purchase at a thrift shop?
An op – shop. Haven’t bought anything from one for years. The ones near me are just full of all that mass-produced, neon coloured crap that everyone buys then realises is just cheap rubbish.

For old times sake meme

When was the last time you swam in a pool?
A couple of weeks ago – the ocean baths in town.

Do you like to party?
No – I very much do not like to party.

Describe the shirt you’re wearing?
It’s a grey bonds singlet.

What is one feature film that you don’t like?
Just one!! I scoff at many.

Would people describe you as happy?
No idea – I think I am. Mostly.

Sleep with or without clothes on?
That’s a bit personal. With – because you always have to be ready to run from the house if the need arrives.

Does it bother you if people swear around you?
No. I’m trying to cut back myself so I don’t like to be a hypocrite. Although it bothers me when little kids swear or when mothers tell their five-year old to shut the fuck up. Or grandmothers – I heard a nanny tell a little kid to shut the fuck up in Big W the other day and then he told her that he was fed up with her.

Do you prefer Wednesdays or Thursdays?
They’re pretty much the same but probably Thursdays because Wednesdays include grocery shopping and that’s always a way to ruin a good day.

Like to travel?
Sort of. I like the idea of it more than the reality of it. If Australia wasn’t so far away from everywhere I’d like it better. We have a three-hour train trip to even get to the airport where we then have to travel for another 10 hours minimum to get anywhere. Travelling within Australia is very expensive which is annoying.

Think you’re attractive?
I think so.

Are or were you a good student?
No, hated it with a passion.

Are you currently happy?
Well that’s why I said mostly in the previous happy question.

Colored or black-and-white photo?
Depends but I do like my colour

Do you consider yourself the life of the party?
Considering I don’t like to party I’d have to say no.

Do you drink?
As much as possible.

Do you make fun of people?
No. Okay well sometimes but not in a mean way. It happens when we’re on family holidays. If we’re staying at a resort or motel we give other tourists names and make up stories for them and sometimes we get a bit carried away. We don’t make fun of anyone because of their looks or that sort of thing. Oh, well once we did – 15 years on you still only have to say the word Boobsy and everyone in the house knows who you’re talking about.

Do you think dreams eventually come true?
I hope not – mine are usually horrendous night terrors that leave my heart pounding.

Favorite fictional character?
Too many. Current one is Blanche from a book I read yesterday called Frog Music. I’ll always have a soft spot for Almondine from The story of Edgar Sawtelle.

Go to the movies or rent?
Don’t watch a lot of movies but I meet my daughter once a month in a town between us and we go see a movie and have lunch.

Have you ever moved?
Fifteen times so far.

Have you ever stolen anything?
I don’t think so. Not from a shop or anything serious – just coins from the top of my fathers dreser when I was a kid.
How’s the weather right now?
Still hot and muggy but at least the mornings are cooling down a bit. Just started to rain.

Last time you cut your hair?
Tomorrow

Last person you talked to on the phone?
I hate talking on the phone so I can’t remember. It’d be a work related thing though – or maybe my daughter.

Last time you showered?
Yesterday – I’m just about to have one now.

Loud or soft music?
depends what I’m doing.

McDonalds or Burger King?
Neither.

Night or day?
Day
Number of pillows?
Theres about six or seven. I like to prop up while I’m reading and I like a boomerang under my knees and Chicken Little likes a european to lie on.

Piano or guitar?
Piano

Current longing?
strange word longing – I’m not really longing for anything but I have been wanting a chocolate thickshake for about 24 hours now and hope to have one for lunch.

Current disappointment?
Our business partner.

Current annoyance?
Our business partner.

Last thing you ate?
Ricotta and mozza stuffed pasta shells in tomato garlic sauce I made for dinner last night. Yummo.

Last thing you bought?
Nothing exciting – just groceries.

Pick a lyric, any lyric or a song…
I’m like a waterlogged ball that no one wants to kick around anymore.

Pick a movie quote…
I’ve got nothin. (That’s not the quote, that’s just a fact).

The 20Q Meme

From Bzoink

1. When you buy a greetings card are the words or the picture more important to you?
I make my greeting cards so it’s usually all about the picture. Although I did go through a stage of making up Dr Seuss style verses to put inside and they were pretty cool. Or I thought so.
2. What’s your favorite kind of cake?
I’m not much of a cake eater but probably just plain old basic chocolate.
3. Do you ever make gifts for people, if so what, or do you buy them?
I make lots of gifts for people – usually using a photo I’ve taken or one of Papas. If I buy something I put a lot of thought into it and consider who it’s going to.
4. You are chosen to have lunch with the President. The condition is you only get to ask one question. What do you ask?
I wouldn’t choose to have lunch with the President. I wouldn’t choose to have lunch with our Prime Minister either. Why ruin a good lunch with politicians.
5. Which do you dislike most: pop-up ads or spam email?
Pop ups I guess – I don’t get much spam email, my filter must be pretty good.
6. What was the best party you’ve ever been to?
It was a fondue party in about 1985 that one of my friends threw for some reason. He had about twenty fondues set up with all sorts of things to dip, sweet and savoury, lots of cheese. Lots of loud music and the alcohol was flowing – it was a pretty fun night.
7. Which is worse, being in a place that is too loud, or too quiet?
I don’t know anymore. Since this tinnitus developed they’re both awful, I just like moderate constant noise. Too quiet and I concentrate on the crazy chirpy ringing noises in my head but too loud drives me to distraction and I can’t concentrate on what anyone’s saying. Especially scraping noises – cafes with tile floors and chairs dragging in and out and coffee machines blasting – ahhhhhhhh.
8. You are offered an envelope that you know contains $50. You are then told that you may either keep it or exchange it for another envelope that may contain $500 or may be empty. Do you keep the first envelope, or do you take your chances with the second?
I’m not a gambler, I’d keep the first
9. Do you wish cellphone etiquette was a required class upon purchasing one?
No really. People on phones don’t bother me, I can block them. People with no manners need etiquette lessons in all areas of life not just in phone use. The ones who do annoy me are the ones who walk along the footpath looking at their phone and not where they’re going and assume other people will move out-of-the-way but I don’t, I just push them.
10. What’s the most messed up food combination that you’ve had that was actually good?
I think people are usually surprised about vegemite and avocado toast or egg and vegemite toast. It’s the contrast between the creamy and the sharp that works.
11. What’s one of your most random pet peeves (something that annoys you)?
When you tell someone something and then they come back a couple of days later and tell that same thing to you as if you weren’t the one who just told them.
12. When is the last time you had home cooking?
Last night – I have it every day.
13. If you could be a fictional character from a book who would you choose?
Well I always fancied being Sugglepot or Cuddlepie (gumnut babies)
14. If you could be in a television sit-com, which would you choose?
None – I don’t watch them.
15. If you could be any animal or creature for one day, what would it be?
Chicken Little – just so I could know what goes on in that little head.
16. What’s your favorite girl’s name?
Well probably the ones I chose for my daughters but I do like the name Eadie for a girl and I didn’t get a chance to use it as my third baby was a boy. It was the name of one of my grandmothers friends.
17. What’s your favorite boy’s name?
Lloyd. It’s always cool to meet another one, they pop up every now and then.
18. What’s your supermarket of choice?
Wherever things are the cheapest and not many people go to.
19. If you were to attend a costume party tonight, what or whom would you go as?
I don’t know – I really don’t have many dress up supplies in the house and I’m not going to the shops. There’s an afro wig up in the spare room.
20. What is your concession stand must-have at the movies?
Nothing!! All food and drinks should be banned from the movies. Unless it’s oatmeal or something soft like that. I have never understood why people can’t just sit for two hours without having to eat and drink. I mean seriously – is there anything more annoying than the slow chip packet opener cracking open that packet second  by slow second in an effort to be quiet.

Cruising: the good, the bad and the boring

I’ve been home for a few days now but I’ve been in bed with a head cold, a throat infection and a weird rash. Now I’m not going to come right out and blame it on ship germs but well, you have to be suspicious. Actually I must say that the ship was very clean and they were all over hygiene. All the eating places had hand sanitiser at the door and the toilets had paper towels to open the doors so you didn’t have to touch the handle then bins to toss them in and they were constantly sweeping up and wiping down. So what I mean is people germs on the ship.

The Good.
I didn’t feel sick at all, in fact I never even felt slightly queasy. I was left thinking that people who do become sea-sick must have some sort of inner ear problem because I just can’t see how people could get as sick as they do.

I didn’t once think that I might die at sea in a ship wreck. Not even when we were in the middle of a massive lightning and thunder-storm in the middle of the night. It was just one of those things that’s so far out of your control that there’s no point worrying about it.

The rooms were a good size – bigger than most motel rooms I’ve been in and it came with a balcony and a good sized bathroom.

The Bad
Just about everything else. The sea is big people and it’s kind of boring, it just goes on and on and on. We went three days before we saw a single thing which ended up being a pod of dolphins and let me tell you it was an exciting moment; you’d of thought people had never seen a dolphin before by the way they were oooing and aaaing over them. Well actually, maybe they hadn’t, who knows where all those passengers came from. Anyway prior to that excitement there was nothing – not a fish or a bird or a turtle or a shark. My nephew told us he saw a shark but I’m pretty sure it was because he missed seeing the dolphins. You missed seeing the dolphins! That’s ok, I saw a shark just before. Says he, nibbling away at his – high tea at sea macarons and cakes.

I can see how/why people love cruising and become addicted to it but it’s just not for me. I felt too confined with too many people – 2600 of them in fact plus the staff. If I could get off the ship every day at a different place I think I could handle it but just being on it day after day would do my head in. I still think one of those river cruises would be nice or one where you flew to Hawaii then went around the islands.

I think you need to like eating a lot to enjoy cruising – you can literally eat for 24 hours a day. A couple walked past me and one said to the other – how many days have we been on this boat and the reply was, I don’t know but we’ve eaten a lot of meals.

They needed more happening throughout the day besides gambling, bingo, 90’s music trivia, a mature age meetup and other such frivolity. They had some good shows on at night and good live music but they needed that happening through the day as well.

We were a group of five adults and two kids and I think it’s good to go with a group as you can always find someone to hang out with if someone else wants to have a lie down or hide for a while. I saw a few party groups on board; a hens party, a 21st party, a 50th party and a wedding anniversary party and I think that could be a fun idea.

But be warned people – drinks are not cheap and according to the information book they put in your room, Australians like to drink. I wish I’d taken that book with me now, they had a list of differences between American and Australian passengers and the number one difference was the amount of alcohol we drink – you pussies. I remember it said that (and I quote) American passengers like to wait until 5pm to start drinking whereas Australians like to start early then keep up a steady pace for the rest of the cruise. LOL. The bar staff must be shaking in their boots waiting for us to arrive. I must say though that they do make excellent cocktails. Terrible coffee though. Apparently (the book told me) they sent the staff to Barista school three times to learn how to satisfy the Australian need for good coffee but I think they need about another two lessons. The other one I remember is lamb – apparently they don’t put lamb on the American cruise menus but we get it and wine is more popular with Australian passengers. Not too popular with me mind you being $13 a glass!!

Don’t worry I didn’t sit around crying all weekend, we had laughs but I can cross it off the list and know that it’s not something I’ll be doing again. Kiss that 18 day cruise to Hawaii goodbye mother. Although now I think about it, my sister (not Emjay) went cruising to Vanuatu and enjoyed it, she said she wouldn’t mind doing another one so there you go, whatever floats your boat.

happy birthday to me

Well I woke up this morning and I was 50. How the hell did that happen!

I must admit that I wasn’t one of those people who ran towards 50 embracing it as the start of a new life. In fact last year when my friends began turning 50 it started freaking me out a bit – not the thought that I was getting older but the fact that I’ve lived longer than I have left to live and that the years just seem to be racing by.

But what are ya gonna do about it; the years are going to keep passing by whatever I think about it so I can sit around and ponder it or just go with the flow. Sitting here right now at 50 I could have another 50 years left to go or I could only have another 6 months left to go.

I had a bit of a party on Saturday so it feels as if that was my birth – day so I’ll just be taking it easy today. I was going to invite family but between Daz and I we have a lot of family and once you invite one you have to invite the lot so it would have added another 40 people to the list which would have made it a function which becomes costly and more stressful and not as nice I don’t think. So I’ll just catch up with them over the next few weeks.

So it was close friends and my little family. Who are not so little any more actually. I’ve done a lot of things that I’m proud of over the years but raising those three lovelies would have to be top of the list. They’re all beautiful – inside and out.

Daily Prompt: I Did it My Way

Describe the one decision in your life where you wish you could get a “do-over.” Tell us about the decision, and why you’d choose to take a different path this time around.

Well I’m turning 50 next week so there are about a million things I’d do differently but whats the point of doing that. Do one thing differently and I’d have lived a whole different life and this one hasn’t been so bad.

When I was 18 I was going to do nursing – I’d been accepted and was finishing up all the paperwork. ( Actually I was finishing up the paperwork the night I heard the plane flapping about that went missing and has never been found that the police didn’t believe I heard – maybe they should go back and do that bit differently and they might have found it). Anyway I can’t remember why I didn’t go nursing but if I had of I would have led a whole different life with different friends, husband, kids etc and who knows, it might have been better, might have been worse but there’s no point in even thinking about it. Maybe if I’d gone ahead and done nursing I’d be sitting here now going – damn, I wish I’d moved to Sydney and worked in the sandwich shop my sister was running at the submarine base.

It’s like that movie whatever it was called – you go back and try to change one thing for a better outcome and you just stuff something else up either for yourself or someone else.

You’ve just got to deal with it people – live in the now. You made your choices and they put you where you are – if you made bad ones then just try to learn from them and make better ones from now on.

Not All Those Who Wander Are Lost Meme

from: BlackPanther

  • Put your music player of choice on shuffle and list the first song
    Madonna – Hung Up
  • If you could spend a week anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
At the moment it would be Broome in Western Australia. I’d like to go to      Monkey Mia in WA as well but they’re not anywhere near each other and      travelling to WA is not cheap. It costs the same to fly to Broome as it does to fly to the USA. Also it’s not somewhere you go in summer due to heat, rain and marine stingers in the water. There really aren’t many places in Australia that are great to visit this time of year. Even the southern states are usually having heatwaves and bushfires about now.
  • What is your preferred writing implement? (eg. Blue pen, pencil, green pen)
    Computer keyboard.
  • When did you go on your first trip alone (without your parents)?
I went to Bali when I was 18 on my own. A friend was going with me but she hurt her back the week before so I just went by myself.  Back then every Australian 18 year old was going to Bali so I figured I’d find someone to talk to.
  • Do you have connections to any celebrities (even minor)? List them.
Not even one – definitely not a list of them.
  • Name 3 items you could pick up from where you are.
Well I’m sitting in my office which is always a mess so I could pick up about a thousand things – mostly bits of paper that need filing.
  • How would you describe your sense of humor?
    Sick and twisted, sarcastic, Australian.
  • Do you ever play board games or other non-computer games? Got any favorites?
We played scrabble on board on New Years Eve and I almost died of boredom. It sucked the will to live out of me and I had to go to bed immediately following the games conclusion. We always play it on our phones now and it’s pretty cool because you can play everyone in the family no matter where they are and take as long as you like.
  • A musical artist you love that isn’t well known.
Oh, I don’t know there are a few Australian muso’s not that well known overseas but I’d say my sons girlfriend is the one I love. Last year she played Roxie in Chicago and we went to see it and honestly when she opened her mouth and started singing I almost cried.I was just so proud of her – she was really, really good.
  • A musical artist you love that is well known.
I don’t think I love any – I like a lot but I’m not over the top about one in particular. I was keen on David Bowie when I was younger, when I left home I only had half a dozen records and they were all his.
  • What is your desktop background currently?
    Chicken Little
  • Last person you talked to, and through what you talked to them
Chicken Little – I talked to her through my mouth, lol, if thats what it means. We didn’t do sign language or anything. It’s only 7.30am here so she’s the only one I’ve seen so far.
  • What do you carry your money in?
A handbag my sister Emjay gave me last year. It’s like a handbag that has a zippered section that is a wallet, so you don’t need to carry a wallet. If I don’t want to carry anything I stick a few notes in my bra. Don’t worry I wrap them in a tissue so they don’t get sweaty. People don’t seem to like you paying them with damp dollars pulled from your bra.
  • What timekeeping devices are in the room you are currently in?
The little clock on the corner of the computer
  • What kind of headphones do  you use?
The ones that came with the phone. Theyre not very comfortable actually.
  • What musical artists have you seen perform live?
Well not many because I don’t like being in a crowd. Back in my day, all the good Australian bands just played at local Pubs so you could go out on a friday night and see them without it being a concert. My husband has seen a lot of bands because he always had to take the girls and their friends to see bands they wanted to see when they were younger. He hasn’t been to many with me because when we first started going out I made him come with me to see Bob Dylan and Tom Petty and it went for about three days and I think Daz even had a few naps and it kind of put him off.
  • How often do you clear your browser history?
    Hardly ever
  • What’s the best job you’ve ever had?
None really, I’m one of those people who just work for the pay packet. When I was pregnant with my third child I was working night shift reception at a local Motel (10pm to 7am) and they used to have wedding receptions there and after everyone had gone I was allowed to go into the cool room and eat whatever I wanted from the leftovers which was one of the best job perks I’ve had. Not good for the scales though – I put on 23 kilos that time.
  • What’s the worst job you’ve ever had?
My first job. I worked for a local accountant as soon as I finished school and he was a dirty old bastard and now I’d have him up for harassment but back then I don’t think it was even an option or talked about. His wife worked there as well and she hated me because he was so obvious about it all and he was old and ugly and as if I’d ever want anything to do with him. There was another old bag working there as well – like at least 70 – and the wife and the old bag ganged up  against me and were just mean and nasty and between the three of them they really fucked up that year for me. I just walked out one day.
  • What magazines do you read, if any?
What a waste of money magazines are. I borrow cooking magazines from the library sometimes. I like cooking magazines – they always have beautiful pictures on the covers. Beautiful pictures of things that I’ll never cook.
